Teacher-Engineer devises automated dispensers from scratch

by Abigail I. Mirabel-Agapay

Despite the suspension of face-to-face interaction, Liliw National High School never ceased in equipping the institution with the needs of the learners in the new normal like devising alcohol and sanitizer dispensers.

To avoid the spread of germs and viruses through touching, Mr. Alfie M. Burbos, a Mathematics Teacher and Registered Electronics and Communications Engineer, presented his automated alcohol dispenser to the administration, June 29.

“Kapag press kasi gagawin sa alcohol maraming tao ang magkakaron ng contact, pwedeng kumalat yung virus sa dami ng napress kaya naisip kong gawing automated para wala nang contact sa maraming tao.

Yung magrerefill na lang ang makakahawak doon sa container ng alcohol,” Engr. Burbos explained.

For the prototype, the proponent first made a schematic diagram for the circuit and test then he assembled all the materials like submersible motor pump, distance sensor, transistor, resistor, diode, USB cable and container.

Just like any inventor, the proponent also experienced shortcomings before coming up with the best prototype.

“Medyo challenging yung pagseset ng right amount ng alcohol na lalabas sa dispenser, hindi rin lahat ng materials ay available.

Kailangan pang mag-order sa Manila or Batangas,” the Teacher-Engineer shared.

As support, the school Principal, Ms. Kristine P. Perez and the Brigada Eskwela Chairman, Mr. Jerome S. Monfero pledged to finance the

invention so that nine more units that

cost P700 – P800 each would be

produced.

Aside from the automated alcohol dispenser, Engr. Burbos also created a foot-operated soap or hand dispensermade of PVC pipes, angle bracket, plywood and string.

Each foot-operated dispenser costs P300 – P400 each and eight more units are expected to be created before the start of the school year.

LNHS spots donors to bridge learning amid pandemic

Liliw National High School is now in pursuit for more donors to provide learning opportunities to students affected by the pandemic thru an Adopt-a-Student program entitled “Kaagapay sa Pag-aaral Para Sa Kinabukasan.”

Headed by their chairperson, Ms. Marie Hazel C. Ortega, the team eyed potential donors and sent them letters of solicitation online, June 9.

However, knocking on the stakeholders’

virtually so the committee thought of other ways to pursue people that could be of help.

“Sa panahon po ngayon mahirap makahanap ng mga stakeholders, kasi ang iba pong stakeholders natin e hirap din po ang buhay. Ilan na rin po ang tumanggi, yung iba seen zoned lang sa

messenger, kaya mas minabuti namin na lumabas para magdistribute at maipaliwanag pa po ang program natin,” Ms. Ortega shared.

Even they did the solicitation personally, they made sure that proper health protocols were observed, however even the personal plight was not as smooth as before.

“Dati mabilis ako makakuha ng tulong sa mga seaman, e ngayon po pati sila kailangan din ng tulong. Kaya mahirap po, maging yung SGC President po natin na si Pres.Remedios Borlaza nahihirapan din pong makakuha ng donors po ngayon,” the chairperson added.

Yet, the team did not stop looking for

who still have the heart and capacity to

help the learners and their efforts were greatly rewarded.

As a matter of fact, LNHS Alumni Association just turned over 15-thousand worth of school supplies to the committee, June 29.

General Parents and Teachers Association also pledged to donate 10-thousand worth of educational assistance when the school year opens.

On the other hand, Ron’s Seafood Restaurant also promised that they would let students without connectivity use their internet connection whenever they have online classes.

The team is scheduled to visit more donors of load allowances and gadgets so that less fortunate students would still have the chance to experience online learning and other feasible modalities in the upcoming school year.
